It's Friday and I'm making cocktails.
Gin, club soda, grenadine and a slice of blood orange...or grapefruit if you're feeling extra sweet. Cheers to the weekend!

2016 Summed Up

Thursday, January 5, 2017

Words & Photography
by Jessie Alexis

From the high point of the incomparable joy of adding a new baby to our family, to the devastation of losing our Grandpa Tom, and every emotion in between, 2016 was oh so full, and oh so rich, and oh so heavy.
I believe 2016 can be summed up with the well-known words of Charles Dickens, "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair..." From the high point of the incomparable joy of adding a new baby to our family, to the devastation of losing our Grandpa Tom, and every emotion in between, 2016 was oh so full, and oh so rich, and oh so heavy. It is with nervous anticipation I look to 2017, bring it on.

On Our Way Out

Wednesday, January 4, 2017

"We're all on our way out—act accordingly." - Jack Nicholson as Frank Costello in Scorsese's "The Departed" — one of my all time favorite movies, a little known fact. I've seen it likely 100 times. These peonies are on their way out and even more beautiful for it. Bringing me forever back to my refrain about the ephemeral being the most beautiful of all because we can't hold on to it; it's precious.

The sun through my kitchen window was making them glow just now, a last blaze of glory. They were once a deep magenta but have since faded to blush, withered around their edges. I like them much better this way. Of all the arts, floral and culinary are the most ephemeral, and as such they embody the wabi sabi ethos. There's irony in my photographing them...lost in translation...static in a dynamic process. Photos are shadows; life is even better, a mess of complexities and longing and loss. Of appetite and conviction and conflicts between.

Becoming One Of Two

Words & Photography

In just about two months, my only child will become one of two.
I don't know how my heart could possibly grow any larger,
but from what I've heard from other mothers,
it doubles in size instantaneously.

Getting Dressed

I've always considered dressing myself to be a form of creative expression. Since having become a mom I still find that to be true, however the execution has become trickier...
I've always considered dressing myself to be a form of creative expression. Since having become a mom I still find that to be true, however the execution has become trickier...Requiring me to quite literally roll up my sleeves and get messy, haha. Meshing form and function looks a whole lot more like colliding, and when I find something that works -- I run with it!
