A Second Go Around

Words & Photography
by Jessica Perez

Last year was a roller coaster. The first year of business always is. Though this was my second go at starting a business.

The first time I started a photography business was 5 years ago, and quit shortly after. I was overwhelmed, burnt out and didn't know what the hell I was doing. I was alone. Isolating myself and my creativity, and never asked for help. Didn't join any blogs, communities, or photography events in fear of what others would say and think. Constantly fearing other photographers as a threat and competition. And I am afraid to say that it didn't last long before I threw in the towel. I didn't pick up a camera again for 2 and a half years...and I had almost forgotten what it felt like to shoot.

Though last year, I gave it another go. Terrified; I dove back in and tried this business once more. This time a bit differently...
I leaned into this amazing community of artists and I took a leap. And each day I learn something new.
I embraced my community. I reached out for help. I went to photography gatherings where nobody knew me. I joined forums. I harnessed the power of social media. I leaned into this amazing community of artists and I took a leap. And each day I learn something new. Each day I am humbled by the people around me. If I could personally thank everyone of you who inspired me, I would! But that would literally be impossible! So to everyone who liked a photo, sent an inspiring email, shared a pic, wrote a comment, or shouted me out, know that every bit meant the world to me. And it is the only reason why I continue to pursue.
