What's Beautiful

Words & Photography
by Sarah Copeland

Honestly, I'm not even sure what a beautiful photo is anymore. We're saturated with so many that are styled and perfect, and it seems we no longer accept anything less.

But I know what's beautiful to me. This little girl, her fierce love and loyalty, her big fat tears about wanting to make her daddy's birthday special--all about him, with all of his favorite things, and what a heartbreak it was to be away from him at school on his day.
We've been talking all week about what to make for him, studying him, asking sly questions...she came up with pin the legs on the ladybug, and homemade tirimisu.

And her headscarf and apron get-up? Inspired by her favorite Russian cartoon. She has no interest in being like everyone else (just like her Jedi-ninja-warrior-samurai-hero of a daddy) and I love that.
