A Day Captured | November 10, 2014

Two years ago, when I first visited Tacoma, I never thought I would be living here. It seemed like a city outsite of Seattle that just wasn’t as cool. Funny enough, through a crazy road of open doors and happenstance, I ended up living in my first apartment, on my own for the first time, here in the gritty port city of Tacoma, Washington.

My original thoughts of this city not being as cool as Seattle have quickly washed away, and now I see Tacoma for what it is: a unique city of its own right in the pacific northwest that just happens to be a close neighbor to the Emerald City of Seattle.

Most of the buildings have been converted from old brick factories and warehouses, so it has this amazing old urban vibe that is unparalleled.

For the past couple months that I’ve lived here, I keep finding new places and spots around every corner. There is a shop downtown that literally only sells recycled knick-nacks and other peoples' trash, just waiting for the right person to come along with a crazy idea of how to use them in creative ways. Right across the street from my best friend's apartment is a bar that, somehow, we're able to always catch happy hour at (with minutes to spare at times)!

I am currently enrolled at University of Washington Tacoma, and working on finishing the degree I started back in California. I absolutely love the campus here. Most of the buildings have been converted from old brick factories and warehouses, so it has this amazing old urban vibe that is unparalleled. Right across the street is Anthem Coffee. It is my favorite, but I’m a little biased because I've shared so many memories there, and I even work there as a barista now. Plus, it seems like every time I’m in, whether I am working or not, I run into somebody I know or end up meeting some awesome new individual.

Can’t go wrong with amazing milkshakes and a perfect retro vibe.

I love the little shops and eateries that I’ve discovered during my time visiting and now living here. I stopped by Urban Exchange on the downtown strip after lunch to sell some clothes I hadn’t worn in a long time. I always love stopping by because of how awesome the owners and the entire staff are. You are always welcomed with a smile, and then you’re blown away by the great curration and the way the shop is kept up. So great!

I ended the night by grabbing a bite at Shake Shake Shake with one of my best friends. I think this place was one of the first places I ever stepped foot in when I came here. Can’t go wrong with amazing milkshakes and a perfect retro vibe.

I love living here. It's been hard to get into the groove of things, but now that I kinda found my little plot in this new state I think I’m going to be just fine.

Oh, Seattle. You gloomy, gritty, gorgeous city. You are one of my absolute favorites.

Seattle: Art Museum

This is the last of my Seattle posts (and I'm sure you're sick of them by now lol)!

The SAM was great! So many forms of art were displayed here, and we spent a good 2 hours walking around, trying to see it all. And though I didn't take any pictures of them, my absolute favorite rooms were those in which the old European paintings were hung. Being able to stand in the presence of works of art created in the 15th century was astounding.

Seattle: Pike Place Market

This historic public market had hundreds of vendors; there was so much to see! Fishmongers, fresh produce stands, arts and crafts booths...I may have gotten sidetracked by all the goods, that I didn't take as many photos as I could have.

Seattle: The Crumpet Shop

This shop was one of my favorites that we stopped in in Seattle! I had never had a crumpet before, but the staff were warm and friendly, and explained to us exactly what they were. Basically, they are similar to english muffins, but more cakey. Although they had a wide range of toppings for their crumpets (both savory and sweet), Anthony and I decided to keep it simple with just butter and preserves. They. were. delicious.

Seattle: The Bookstore Bar

After our trip to the aquarium and on our walk back to the hotel, we decided to stop for a coffee at The Bookstore. I had never set foot in a place like this before...it was half library, half bar/bistro. The vibe was so mellow and cozy that I could have relaxed there for the rest of the evening.

Seattle: The Aquarium

One night before dinner, we decided to walk over to the aquarium, which was only a couple blocks from our hotel. It was raining that evening, so it wasn't the best time to see the sea lions and otters outside, but we did manage to get a couple good shots of the sea life in the indoor tanks.

Seattle: The Hi-Life

I made it a point to visit the Ballard area while we were in Seattle so that we could visit some of the amazing restaurants they have there! We were lucky enough to randomly stop for lunch at The Hi-Life. This place was the coolest! Situated in what used to be an old fire station, this American grill's delicious food was complimented by its awesome atmosphere!
