The Meals That I Remember

A meal is more than just a well-dressed salad, or a perfectly cooked duck breast. A meal is more than just food: it’s the atmosphere and the company.
The food doesn’t have to be spectacular: a store bought croissant can taste amazing in the company of a loved one...

I cannot say for sure what the best meal I’ve ever had was. It might have been those crispy prawns that I had in Cape Town, or maybe the fresh chanterelles I found in Sweden, or even that bowl of rice noodles with trout that we shared in the dim light on that old worn out sofa that now seems far too familiar. But there is one thing all those meals have in common: I remember them so clearly. It is like reliving a memory with tangible elements, where I can almost smell those chanterelles and feel the texture of the crispy prawns. The food doesn’t have to be spectacular: a store bought croissant can taste amazing in the company of a loved one. Yet, that delicious rump steak might not taste as fantastic when you’re sitting by yourself in front of the TV.

I guess it is not just about the food; it’s also about the company and the joy of sharing an experience with someone else.
