Words & Photography
by Nina Plummer

We've grown up with more than we could ever need. Generations before us dealt with hardships we've been spared, and the concept of too much didn't feature in their daily existence. We have inherited their legacy and in it, the lingering feeling that there is always more we could have. But I increasingly see our generation feeling burdened by all we have. The cost to our well-being and the world around us is becoming increasingly apparent. Especially to those thoughtful people who are spending increasing amounts of time considering what the alternatives might be.

It's not easy, as our evolutionary heritage drives us to always seek more. But I do believe that one possible way forward is learning to truly savour what we have. This seems easy and obvious but living in this way requires more practice and dedication than is immediately apparent. ⠀

The first step always involves a more mindful approach to consumption and to what we already have. Simply becoming aware and dedicating more attention to something starts to change the quality of what we are attending to. Again, truly paying attention to something may seem easy, but it's not and it requires our ongoing effort. ⠀

So I continue to strive towards attending more closely and living more mindfully. And though it's a steep hill to climb, every step makes me feel a little more humbled and a little more contented.
