Reviving Leftovers

Tuesday, May 22, 2018

Fontina-stuffed gnocchi with sautéed spinach and a tomato cream sauce.

I’ve been spending more and more time in the kitchen lately. Since I was a little kid, I’ve been annoyingly particular about leftovers. There’s just something about the way food rarely seems to look/taste the same way as it did when it was first prepared. Am I the only one who’s grossed out by that?
Since I was a little kid, I’ve been annoyingly particular about leftovers. There’s just something about the way food rarely seems to look/taste the same way as it did when it was first prepared.
Having said that, this dish from Francesca's was so good the other night, and I wanted to do everything I could to salvage it. So I made a roux, turned it into an alfredo sauce, and gently tossed the gnocchi in order to revive it’s shape while reheating it. I added some garlic, a little olive oil, and fresh parmesan, and became one of those embarrassing people who likes to pretend they’re on Chopped.

We pretty much feel romantic love for a good food truck around here. We finally tried La Cocinita last weekend and it is the REAL DEAL Holyfield, guys. Even decided to cater the twins' birthday party with their fine fare.

Lula Cafe

This was my favorite brunch spot in Logan Square- it is definitely a "must". It's got a casual, funky vibe, and offers a "farm-to-table" menu. Brunch was amazing! I had their Lula Turkey Sandwich (yummy!) and a skim latte. The bar area was packed and the lighting was beautiful, so we stayed and had mimosas afterwards!

I spent a lot of time at The Allis, located in the lobby of Soho House Chicago. It's simply, cozy, and you never want to leave. The decor, design and atmosphere is super chic and the lighting is "killer" for all those Instagram worthy shots!

Feast was one of my fave restaurants in Wicker Park; the corn soup was absolutely delicious, and the grilled trout salad was the best salad I've had- ever. They also have a patio which I'm sure is pumping in the Spring/Summer time.

Parson's Chicken & Fish

Parson's was my favorite little restaurant serving THE best fried chicken I've had in my life, accompanied by the most adorable and delicious frozen cocktail, The Original Negroni Slushy, made with Letherbee Gin, Luxardo Bitters, Sweet Vermouth and citrus- yum! The bar is super cool and I loved their stools and color palette.

Public Hotel

The hotel is super chic and the lighting is dark and sexy inside throughout the entire day. The rooms were well lit and spacious, but my favorite part was our dinner at the Pump Room (Chef Jean-Georges Vingerichten never disappoints!). I had the ricotta ravioli to start, and next was the glazed short ribs with potatoe puree, followed by an apple tart, which was to die for, honestly.
