New Family Tradition

Friday, November 30, 2018

And I have to say, it has become one of my favorite family traditions so far...one that I hope my girls remember when they are older. Splitting a big plate of eggs and bacon, ordering stuffed beignets, and then taking a stroll...
We've been waking up every Saturday morning for about a month now and going to eat breakfast at a local cafe just a few blocks down the street. And I have to say, it has become one of my favorite family traditions so far...one that I hope my girls remember when they are older. Splitting a big plate of eggs and bacon, ordering stuffed beignets, and then taking a stroll to see our local crocodile, because #SouthernAF. Also, no cleanup for mama!!

led to maybe just one berry sprig...which led to bells,
which led to maybe just one tiny Christmas tree...

It'll Wreck You

Tuesday, November 27, 2018

It was partially my fault because he was so tired but I also needed to get some things done. We both cried on the way home.
My boys. One of them threw a huge (I’m ready for a nap) fit in Target today and it was exhausting. I wanted to crawl into a hole. It was partially my fault because he was so tired but I also needed to get some things done. We both cried on the way home. Then when we got home we had a little talk about how he shouldn’t scream and act like that, and how he needed to be a good boy for mama. He said “Okay...wuv you.” MOTHERHOOD, MAN. It’ll wreck you but it’s also the best.

Insta-break

Monday, November 26, 2018

Words & Photography
by Tracie Weaver

Took a little Insta-break from this weekend to focus on work and my kids! I found myself randomly getting on here, liking a photo or two, and then just getting off, and it’s honestly what I needed!

I sometimes I find myself trying to figure out where I fit in with this app, and who I fit in with, and am constantly comparing myself, and then I’m like why why why?! This is so stupid, my friends are my friends because they like the person I am. People follow me for what I post, people follow me because they love my kids. I will get messages all the time saying, “I love your feed!” or, “Omg how do you keep your feed so cohesive?” or, “How do you edit your photos, I love the look!”, and truthfully the one and very first thing I always say is, “Stay true to yourself!” I had to remind myself this weekend to do just that and take a step back and get my comparing self out of my head  so that I could just enjoy my kids and my life outside of this app!
...and truthfully the one and very first thing I always say is, “Stay true to yourself!” I had to remind myself this weekend to do just that...
I encourage everyone to do just that and seriously stay true to yourself because that’s what our souls need more than anything! Comparison sucks, not fitting in sucks, mean girls suck...it all sucks, but what doesn’t suck is my family and amazing friends and staying true to myself!

Waking Up Slower

I’ve been trying to take some time for myself every morning. Waking up earlier so I can wake up slower.
I’ve been trying to take some time for myself every morning. Waking up earlier so I can wake up slower. I’ve noticed since I been making an effort to read, meditate, and just relax first thing, it helps my days go sooo much smoother. Self care is not something I was taught, so learning it and it’s importance in overall health, especially right now in my life, has not just been essential, but necessary.

The Daily Work Of Motherhood

Tuesday, November 13, 2018

Last night was a rough night. My little pisces, Griffin, was in so much pain with being sick, writhing and crying in his sleep, and wanted my comfort even though I was sleeping right next to him. So today, I’m deeply exhausted.

It reminded me of the early days of motherhood: the sleepless nights, the crying, and trying to soothe a newborn. Motherhood, this last four years has been such a journey. My expectations have shifted - as they’ve grown, I’ve grown. As they have gotten a little older I find they need or want me a little less, which is bittersweet and liberating all in one breath. But this week they’ve needed more of me.
My expectations have shifted - as they’ve grown, I’ve grown. As they have gotten a little older I find they need or want me a little less, which is bittersweet and liberating all in one breath.
Today I’m reminded that motherhood takes daily emotional and spiritual work. It is equal amounts of caring, patience, balance, release, compassion, boundaries, and doing your best. Because as much as you love your child, you truly can’t fix everything.

Today’s nap time won’t be for dishes, it will be for caring for myself.

Within These Walls

Friday, November 9, 2018

When we decided to put our home up here in the attic space of our business, we knew it would be tight quarters...and the boys’ room was the smallest of them all. But we’re big fans of sharing rooms in our family; in fact, even if we lived in Buckingham palace, I’d still have them share a room.

There’s safety in numbers, and I believe the time they spend in their little room together is where the friendships and ties that bind are made. The hours they spend talking each night will be some of their most precious memories, I’m sure of it. And while they don’t have a lot in here, I truly believe they have everything they need.
...the time they spend in their little room together is where the friendships and ties that bind are made...And while they don’t have a lot in here, I truly believe they have everything they need.
We have very few toys- we don’t have electronics that they can lock themselves up with behind closed doors, yet- they are happy. They have a cozy bed for sleeping, a few good books for reading, and they have each other. They don’t need a lot, friends...just love really. And I hope they always know there’s plenty of that to go around within these little walls.

After School Snack

But the days I have time to, it brings me great joy to love them this way. To take time to delight in being their mother. It’s as much a treat for me as it is for them.
One of my favorite fall treats to make: apple nachos. I don’t always make the boys an after school snack, and, in fact, most days I’m scrambling to the bus stop after my alarm goes off to tell me not to forget my child. But the days I have time to, it brings me great joy to love them this way. To take time to delight in being their mother. It’s as much a treat for me as it is for them.

Moments of absolute quiet in this house are far and few between,
but when they do come it’s glorious.

Chocolate, Zucchini, and Teff Cake

Friday, November 2, 2018

Words & Photography
by Tiffany Howard

I’m sharing the recipe for a quick Chocolate, Zucchini, and Teff Cake. Teff flour has a toasted, earthy flavor that is perfect with dark chocolate. You could definitely whip up a quick icing to top it, but I just dusted it with powdered sugar. The recipe calls for both cocoa powder and chocolate chips, I recommend using the best quality you can for this one. You can find the recipe below. Enjoy!

Chocolate, Zucchini, and Teff Cake

Ingredients
3/4 cup (90 grams) gluten-free all purpose flour (such as Bob’s Red Mill’s 1-to-1 flour)
1 1/2 cups (242 grams) teff flour
1 cup (200 grams) white sugar
1 cup (200 grams) brown sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon xanthan gum
1/2 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup (80 grams) cocoa powder
pinch of cinnamon
4 eggs
2/3 cup vegetable oil
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon espresso powder dissolved in 1 teaspoon hot water (optional, brings out the chocolate flavor)
3 cups grated zucchini
1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
2. Butter an 8 or 9 inch baking pan and dust with cocoa powder, tapping out the excess.
3. In a large bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients.
4. Make a well in the middle, and add the eggs, oil, zucchini, vanilla, and dissolved espresso powder (if using). Mix well, the batter will be very thick.
5. Stir in the zucchini until combined, then gently fold in the chocolate chips.
6. Pour into the prepared pan, smooth the top, then bake for 20 minutes. Rotate the pan in the oven, then bake for an additional 10 minutes.
7. Check for doneness by inserting a toothpick into the center of the cake. If it comes out with just a few crumbs, it’s done.
8. Allow the cake to cool on a rack, then run a knife around the edges of the pan to loosen the cake and turn out to cool completely.
9. Dust with powdered sugar and serve.

*This cake is even better the next day, so this is a great one to make in advance.

Autumn Leaves

I have a real obsession with autumn leaves.
I love the different colors, the smell, the way each one is unique.
Every time I find one that I love, I pick it up,
which happens every time I go out.
I have some in my pockets, in my books,
and all around the house.
